CHAPTER 11
Sarah
Laughter brings me up out of a dead sleep. The best sleep that Iâve had in a solid year at least.
âDadâ¦stop!â The girlâs voice is actually happy. I recognize it as Leonâs daughter, Penny.
âDrop that spatula, Dad! Weâve got to go. Iâm meeting Kai at her house in fifteen minutes. Iâm gonna be late if you donât let me go!â
She shrieks with laughter and I sit up and stretch before getting up and scuttling around looking for my clothes. I donât know how I got in the spare room but Leon must have moved me before his daughter could find me in his bed. Flushing, I thank the heavens that he did. I donât want that to happen at all.
Finally I find a pair of sweats and a big, oversized t-shirt that falls off my shoulder and I slip out of the door, petting at my short curls to try and get them under control.
I reach the doorway to the kitchen and stand, barefoot, shifting from one foot to another.
Leon looks up at me and smiles, but this time it feels like somethingâs shifted, like heâs controlling his emotions.
âHello, Sarah. You remember my daughter, Penny.â
The girlâs shrewd eyes study me like a bug under glass even as she smiles.
âI do remember her. Nice to see you again, Penny.â
âDad said you had some trouble and got kicked out of your hotel. That sucks.â
I nod my head. âYeah. Iâd say so. I hope Iâm not putting yâall out in any way.â
Leonâs pale blue gaze locks on mine. âYouâre not a bit of trouble, Sarah.â
Penny glances back and forth between the two of us. I can feel the tension in the air and she must too.
She clears her throat. âI need to go, Dad.â
He stares at me. âYeah, go get in the car. Iâll be there in a second.â
She eyes us up but slips out of the room silently.
Neither of us even glance away. He finally clears his throat. âIâll be right back and then we can talk or something. Maybe we can watch a movie tonight. You can check out the tv while Iâm gone and see if thereâs something you want to see.â
I nod my head. âThat sounds nice.â But when he nods his head, his blue eyes burning a hole in my body, I fight the urge to run to him, to hug him. To get lost in the fire thatâs fueled every time he touches me.
He turns to walk away and I clench my fists, turning back to the living room, sitting down on the couch and aimlessly scrolling through the long list of movies on the screen, barely seeing any of them.
What am I doing here? Should I just get up and leave. But I donât have any place to go to.
Heâs only gone for about ten minutes and then I hear him slipping back in the door, coming to stand in front of me.
He sighs when he sees me staring at the screen but not really seeing any of it.
